Ajaratu ‘AJ’ Thomas
AJ Thomas is a solicitor with experience in family law, estate planning and employment law. In addition, she has a special interest in health law.
Prior to joining Monardo Solicitors in 2014, AJ worked in another Sydney law firm, where she practised in a range of areas before specialising in family law. During that time, she assisted clients dealing with separation, divorce, child custody issues and child support matters, and also negotiated property settlements.
As an advocate, AJ has acted for clients in a range of civil and criminal matters. She has also successfully acted for clients challenging decisions of the Commonwealth Department of Human Services in the Social Services Appeals Tribunal (which deals with decisions related to social security law, family assistance law and the child support scheme).
At Monardo Solicitors, AJ is a key member of our busy family law practice. She has a particular interest in the rights of children and ensuring that their voices are heard in family law matters. Appreciated by her clients for her pragmatic approach to her matters, AJ focuses on achieving the best possible result as cost-effectively as possible.
Before becoming a lawyer, AJ worked as a senior nurse and as a team leader in emergency departments in public and private hospitals in New South Wales and Queensland. Her experience in the health sector inspired her interest in health law and means that she is particularly well equipped to help clients dealing with health care issues, especially those relating to mental health.
Due to her interest in the rights of refugees and the health issues faced by children in developing countries, AJ is busy outside work hours in the non-for-profit sector. She is on the board of the Salvation Army Humanitarian Mission Board, as well as the Bo Children’s Hospital Foundation, an Australian-based charity linked to Rotary International that aims to improve the health of children and their mothers in the city of Bo (as well as surrounding provinces) in the Republic of Sierra Leone.
AJ has a Masters of Applied Law in Family Law and is currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Health Law at the University of Sydney.
